DIALOGUE SKILLS

Check-out

A check out mirrors the check-in.  It is a structure at the end of a meeting or dialogue that enables individual and group closure by giving each person in turn the opportunity to make their final statement.  While one person is speaking everyone else listens to them.

The purpose of the check-out is to:

• Learn to talk together better

• Achieve a sound collective completion

• Acknowledge what happened in the meeting

• Note actions and individual commitments

• Name what is outstanding

If you have a check-out you won’t need the water cooler conversation to talk about how you think the meeting went, or what you thought other people made of it.  That will all have been stated openly in the check-out.

You can use various forms to the check-out (eg Tagged, Free Form, Around the Circle) and use a question to focus the check-out where you think it will be most beneficial.
